Policy

From 1 October 2013, the Wellcome Trust Open Access Policy requires electronic copies of any monographs or book chapters that have been accepted for publication to be made available in PMC Bookshelf and Europe PMC with a maximum six month embargo period.

If the publisher has an Open Access option for which a fee must be paid, Wellcome Trust will provide grantholders with additional funding to cover open access charges, where appropriate.  Where an open access processing fee has been paid, such works must be made immediately available and be licensed in ways which support their re-use.  Although CC-BY is strongly preferred, where this isn’t available, Wellcome Trust will accept non-commercial and/or no-derivatives licenses (i.e. CC-BY-NC, or CC-BY-NC-ND).

The one exemption to the policy is if the contract to publish a book was in place before 1 October 2014.

Guidance for ensuring compliance with the Wellcome Trust Open Access Policy for monographs and book chapters is available at the Wellcome website.
